14-15 February 2024
ILC Asia members Ekta Parishad, Community Self Reliance Centre, National Land Reform Forum of Nepal, and Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ANGOC), and their partner Nepal Mahila Ekata Samaj, are taking the opportunity of the World Social Forum 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal, to unite the land rights movement in South Asia.
Through these two historical figures of non-violence, we would like to connect India (departure in New Delhi) and Nepal (arrival in Kathmandu).
The march will comprise 400 grassroots people from all over South Asia who work on village and land issues. We will bring them into a solidarity march on land and livelihood issues that will attract the attention of policymakers and the media. We will hear from Indigenous Peoples, Dalits, smallholder farmers, women, pastoralists, and youth who will speak about their struggle for land rights. The women's groups from Nepal (Ekta Mahila Samaj) will share about the increasing migration of women to seek better opportunities, leaving only a few to stay to tend the farms. There is a big land movement in the hills and Terai, and women are at the forefront.
Schedule of the march
14 February 2024
At 8 am, the Indian group will be joined by the Nepali group at Raxaul (Bihar border). Together, we will cross the border, walk and meet organisations along the way: Birgunj (opening event), Parwaipur corner (to meet Yatri), and Jeetpur (to meet National Land Rights members). After completing 9.5 kilometres, we will take a bus to Thankot in Kathmandu.
15 February 2024
At 9 am, we will complete our journey by walking 12 kilometres from Thankot to Tundikhel to join the solidarity march at 11 am, organised by the World Social Forum Committee and participate in the opening session of the Forum at 1:30 pm in Bhrikuti Mandap.
